There are hundreds if not thousands of diets around the world, and you might have seen the name the “Paleo Diet” and wondered what is the Paleo Diet.
In the simplest form to understand, the Paleo Diet is based on the natural way humankind used to feed thousands of years ago.
This would mean there are no processed foods and the rest of the diet is based on whole foods which could be picked or hunted. It is also the basis of very healthy eating plans for a good number of people who have been stricken by illnesses.
Food Types You Can Eat on the Paleo Diet
Every time we see a diet, there are always restrictions on what can be eaten. Many of these are what we enjoy to eat, but in the end, they don’t do us any good.
Paleo Food Lists can stretch on and on, so if you choose correctly there are not many restrictions for whole foods, and the good thing is, you don’t have to count calories.
Here is an overview of foods you can add to your Paleo Diet grocery list.
- Grass-fed Meats: Beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, pork, and others. (No processed deli meats)
- Wild-caught Fish and seafood: Salmon, trout, haddock, shrimp, prawns and other shellfish.
- Eggs: Free-range, omega-3 enriched eggs or pastured.
- Vegetables: Broccoli, kale, cauliflower, peppers, onions, carrots, tomatoes and others.
- Fruits: Apples, bananas, oranges, avocados, all berries and more.
- Tubers: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, turnips and others
- Nuts and seeds: Almonds, macadamia nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and more.
- Healthy fats and oils: Extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and any other un-processed oils
- Salt and spices: Sea salt, pepper, garlic, turmeric, rosemary. In fact, any spices can be used.
Foods Not to Eat on the Paleo Diet
If you are looking at the Paleo diet as a weight loss mechanism, there are plenty of foods you should not include on your Paleo shopping list for weight loss.
Although most of these foods are processed in some way, there is one group of foods which should not be on a paleo diet plan for another reason. This will be explained later.
- Sugars and high-fructose corn syrup: Sodas, fruit juices, table sugars, candies, pastries, ice creams and many other processed foods.
- Grains: This section will include bread, pasta, and fours like wheat, rye, barley, etc.
- Dairy: Almost all dairy should be avoided, and this especially the case for low-fat
Processed vegetable oils: Soybean oil, sunflower oil,, corn oil, grapeseed oil, safflower oil cottonseed oil and others.
- Trans fats: These are found in margarine and various other processed foods. They are usually referred to as “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated.”
- Artificial sweeteners: Aspartame, sucralose, cyclamates, saccharin. If you need a sweetener use natural sweeteners or honey.
- Highly processed foods: Everything which is labeled “diet” or “low-fat” are generally less healthy than other packet meals, but as they are processed, give them a wide berth.
Legumes, beans, lentils, and others are on this list, but are natural? They are here because they contain phytic acid which attracts and binds to nutrients. This prevents the body from absorbing them correctly.
Paleo the Next Step
From what science has found about the Paleo diet, there are now a couple of variations which can make the diet a little more palatable.
Butter can be included if it comes from grass-fed cattle and some grains can be added if they are gluten-free. Rice is the one example of this.

All of this is the first step, and ditching all your processed foods is a great start. If it comes in a packet, then there is a chance it is processed so forget it.
